Scholarship Criteria
PURPOSE: To encourage people of all ages to seek a higher education, increase knowledge and understanding of the world around them, to create a better, stronger future for themselves, their descendants, their community and country.
CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY
The applicant must be a legal resident of the United States of America;
The applicant must have a high school diploma or a GED certificate;
The applicant must reflect good citizenship and community involvement;
The applicant must be planning to attend or be currently enrolled at an accredited institution of higher learning as a full or part-time student working toward certification or degree.
Proof of college enrollment is required before award can be presented.
The applicant should indicate if financial assistance is needed to pursue this additional education. (Anyone receiving a full scholarship would not be eligible to receive this award.)
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Student may request an application form from the Scholarship Chairperson either by email or snail mail or download from the Holt Association website. The application must be completed legibly in ink or typed and returned to the Scholarship Chairperson via USPS, postmarked no later than MAY 15th OF THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR.
The submitted application must include the following:
A letter about yourself and your family. Include your scholastic activities, community involvement, sports participation, and club/organizational memberships or affiliations. Share with us your personal and professional goals and aspirations. Include a statement indicating why you believe financial aid would be beneficial to reaching your goals. Please tell us how your family history has influenced the direction you have chosen for yourself. Also, what contribution would you like to make to create a legacy for future generations?
REQUEST YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR TO MAIL to the Scholarship Chairperson, a transcript of your grades from high school and any additional higher education you have received. Please include note of any concurrent classes being taken for college credit.(Suggest you provide stamped, addressed envelope.) Must be received by May 31st.
TWO letters of recommendation from a principal, dean, teacher and/or clergy member, community leader, or employer. (NOT from a family member or relative.) Letters should be mailed to the Scholarship Chairperson by the author. (Provide a stamped addressed envelope with these requests.) Must be received by May 31st.
A recent unmounted photograph of yourself (approx. 2-1/2 x 3-1/2) which would be published in the Holt Newsletter if you are the winner. Please write your full name on the back.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The Scholarship Chairperson will review your application to make sure it is complete. You will be notified if additional information is needed. A winner and one alternate will be chosen by the Chairperson and the committee from the entries received prior to the deadline of May 31st. If the winner is unable to proceed as planned, the first alternate will take his/her place. The winner will be announced by the Scholarship Chairperson at the Holt Association annual meeting held on the fourth Saturday in June of each year. All entrants will be informed of the results of the selection process by July 5, following the annual meeting.
AWARD DISBURSEMENT:
The scholarship award check will be mailed by the treasurer of the Holt Association to the college prior to the beginning of the Fall Term of school. The check will be made payable to the College where it is to be used. Funds must be applied toward cost of tuition, books or other educational expenses of the student for the coming school year. Student must provide completed “Instructions to Scholarship Winner” form by July 15 so check can be written.
